Tyche Academy, a college advice company started by three class of 2019 PESH alums, has donated $1500 from just its first month and a half of operations to Minnie’s Food Pantry following a targeted marketing strategy which has led to viral hits on the popular social media app, TikTok, racking over a million views on their profile with over 12 thousand followers in the span of a couple months.
Wanting to give back to the Plano community during the COVID-19 epidemic, three highschool friends– Annie Jain, (Princeton ‘23) Alex Lin (Georgetown ‘23), and Leann Lee (University of Chicago ‘23)– started a college advising service which aimed to donate 50% of proceeds to support COVID-19 relief efforts.
Although the company initially relied on word-of-mouth advertising within their local communities, they found growth to be slow and turned to look for alternative means of advertisement. Their solution? TikTok.
TikTok is a social media app, created by the Chinese company ByteDance, where users share short, catchy sixty second videos set over a short musical excerpt. Although it’s come under fire as US-China tensions worsen, it’s undeniable that TikTok is one of the most popular apps in the world at the moment, with over 2 billion downloads globally and 100 million monthly active users in the U.S
“It just seemed like the perfect place, not only are all teens on TikTok nowadays, but unlike most other platforms, you don’t need a pre-established following to go viral”-Co-Founder, LeAnn Lee
“It just seemed like the perfect place,” Leann states. “Not only are all teens on Tiktok nowadays, but unlike most other platforms, you don’t need a pre-established following to go viral”
“We each made one short video giving college application advice we wish we knew just to test the waters. Next thing we know, all of them had over ten thousand views, and Alex’s ended up going viral with over 234,000 views! Our growth has been explosive. Recently we’ve passed over a million views and the 10 thousand follower mark which is a huge milestone for us.”
After raising $3,000 in revenue within the first month, the team decided to donate half of their proceeds to Minnie’s Food Pantry. As co-founder Annie says,
“We know that a heartbreaking amount of families’ lives have been tossed into chaos by the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic and fluctuating job market. Minnie’s important work providing these parents and children with support and food security while they navigate these challenging and unstable times is something which really inspired us. Further, Minnie’s collaborates with families in the Plano school district — an area near and dear to our hearts as Plano East alumni.”
