As part of community outreach efforts, Tyche Academy has been busy hosting voluntary panel presentations this week (week of 8/24) for International Baccalaureate students at Plano East Senior High, our members’ alma mater! Two of three panels have officially been completed – with over 90 students and parents reached so far and counting.
Included in these presentations are general awareness about applying to college and standing out in essays, information on how to highlight IB in college applications, and how to take advantage of the unique skills the IB program provides when applying to college and beyond.
The International Baccalaureate program at Plano East (and many other schools across the world) is a diploma program focused on providing engaged learning to students centered around a global mindset. Furthermore, the curriculum is very personalized, as students often choose how they want to approach learning in their classes by navigating their own path. They elect which courses they want to take at a “higher level” versus at a “standard level” and explore the subject in relation to their own interests through the Extended Essay (EE), Independent Assignments (IAs), and even options for different topics in class units.
Some of the big takeaways from these presentations, related specifically to IB and college applications, are:
- Highlight “extra” IB work through catchy tag-lines in the Activities Section and Resume.
- Tell the “IB Story” through Interviews
- Help your teachers highlight IB in recommendation letters.
- Use the immense writing skills IB provides you with in your college essays.
- Time management, time management, and time management!
Our 25-30 minute presentations were subsequently followed by Q+A segments. We have one last panel presentation for Plano East IB students this Thursday, 8/27 at 4:30 PM CST. Contact us to sign up! To see a brief overview of what we discussed, check out the slides here! We are also offering free 1-on-1 sessions at this time EXCLUSIVELY for Plano East students! Any PESH seniors can sign up here. We can help by reading over an essay, going over extracurriculars and resume, practicing for an interview, answering general questions, and more.
