Tyche Academy, a college advising initiative started by myself, Alex, and LeAnn – two of my Plano East Senior High alumni peers – was at first meant to be relatively small and localized. Our mission has always been to give back to our community during these unprecedented times in a two-pronged manner.

One objective is to affordably help and support high school seniors during one of the most stressful and demanding periods of their educational career, made especially challenging by the current insane circumstances.
Our second goal is to donate half of our proceeds to Covid-19 relief efforts globally and contribute to fighting the ravaging pandemic in worldwide solidarity, given that the other half will be used to keep Tyche alive and support our own educational journeys so that we can afford to put in the necessary time our high schoolers deserve.
In addition to our free blog and weekly email newsletter, we’ve created an account on TikTok, a newly-popular social media and entertainment medium, posting one-minute video clips containing tips and guidance!
Due to our mission, we decided to start creating free content in order to spread awareness and advice surrounding college admissions. In addition to our free blog and weekly email newsletter, we’ve created an account on TikTok, a newly-popular social media and entertainment medium, posting one-minute video clips containing tips and guidance!
In the span of four days, Tyche Academy on TikTok garnered a total of almost 220,000 views as well as 51.1k likes and nearly 2.5k followers. Our engagement rate is over 25%, with one-fourth of all viewers liking, commenting and sharing! This is unprecedented! We are extremely happy that the college applicant community on TikTok is finding our videos useful, and hope to continue helping out as many of our younger peers as we can.
We had to temporarily close our form for free 1-on-1 initial sessions just one day after creating our TikTok, due to almost 200 sign-ups booked for the next three weeks! As we are three college students, we can not afford unlimited hours of advising. However, we are still collecting names on a waitlist for students who we will call in case of no-shows, which we are anticipating. These students will also be considered as priority in the case that we open up free sessions again in a few weeks. We are offering some additional paid services for a cheap fee as well.
We are very excited to meet and get to know the students who have currently scheduled sessions with us, and hope to alleviate some of the burden and anxiety that comes with the process. We are also excited to continue posting helpful tips through TikTok and articles in our newsletter and blog!
